seems like a poor choice of locations for train tracks, though I guess they've held up for a whole lot of years

More than 150 years, in fact. It is the most expensive stretch of railway track in the country to maintain.
They were beginning work in the 30's to reroute inland through the hills but Hitler had other plans...
There was also two tracks that bypassed this unreliable section, but we got rid of them to cut costs in the 60s...
